A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
