Rob Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the early candidates under consideration to succeed the former manager as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the team's 10-match without a victory start to the top-flight campaign.
And both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the team - are part of the options to be evaluated by the Wolves ownership.
The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible hurdle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the former Luton Town head coach - who played over a century of games for Wolves during his playing career - is said to be a strong contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the Wolves board as they begin the search of appointing a fresh head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise candidate, although he would be a shock choice considering he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is out of work which means the club would not be required to pay any buyout fee.
