Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a batch of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.
Summers remarked in a release that he was "grateful for the chance to have served, optimistic about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await observing their development".
Summers, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Message Exchange
The recently released messages showed that the official corresponded with Epstein until the day before his 2019 arrest for suspected sex trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it accepted Summers' determination to step down.
"We acknowledge his many contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," the company commented.
Congressional Action
This development follows after both chambers of Congress agreed on recently to endorse a measure that would compel the US justice department to disclose its files on Epstein.
The measure will then move to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has indicated he intends to endorse the bill, after modifying his view on the matter following objections from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-related messages disclosed by the House Oversight Committee recently referenced several high-profile figures in the financier's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The messages showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to connect the official to influential international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, Summers stated he took "total ownership for my poor decision to maintain interacting with Mr Epstein".
He added that he desired "to reestablish faith and mend bonds with the people closest to me".
Professional History
The professor held high-level positions under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and is still a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public duties recently on Monday, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Further Repercussions
Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal think tank in Washington where he was a prominent member, announced that the economist was no longer associated with the organization.
He became part of the leadership of the AI company, which develops the language model, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its chief executive OpenAI's head.
