Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Claim Initial Wins Following Recent Detentions
Miami put up eighty-six first-half points against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a crushing 146-114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA match after guard Terry Rozier was arrested over alleged unlawful sports betting.
Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested as part of a sweeping FBI probe into illegal gambling. The two individuals deny the claims.
But, the Miami team were focused as they put up eighty-six first-half points to be ahead of Memphis by thirty-nine after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year existence.
Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and later stated Terry had the support of the team.
"We support him. Full support," Adebayo said. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is very dear to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through this."
Portland additionally won their first game after the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and leading the team to a convincing 139 to 119 win over the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Billups and how he coached," Splitter said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests
Speaking about the detentions for the first time, league head Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the incidents of the recent days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he told Amazon Prime. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."
Silver also said an league probe into Rozier's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the gambling firms," he added.
"We investigated that situation and were open regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.
"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an charge.
"And two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Terry.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and investigating."
