Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
